Lullaby Baxter’s new musical, Garden Cities of To-morrow, debuted at Calgary’s Epcor Centre for Performing Arts this past January. The musical tells the story of Dolores Calhoun, a woman only truly happy when doing dishes. Her husband Morton canâ€™t seem to dirty nearly enough dishes. In due course, Dolores takes in orphans, collects dirty dishes from neighbors, and even has strangers send her dirty dishes in the mail. Part fable, part farce, part domestic drama (think Threepenny Opera meets Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman), the musical is built around songs that originally appeared on Lullaby Baxterâ€™s two critically acclaimed albums (Capable Egg and Garden Cities of To-morrow.) Narrated by Lutwidge Sedgwick, Garden Cities of To-morrow stars Baxter herself as Dolores, with Bertram Havisham as Morton and Lily String Quartet as the orphans.

Lullaby Baxter’s new musical, Garden Cities of To-morrow, was presented by Calgary’s One Yellow Rabbit Performance Theatre on January 15th and 16th in the Big Secret Theatre at the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts. This was part of the 22nd Annual High Performance Rodeo which ran from January 5th to 26th.

The show was a big success and will now make its way to various theatres across North America and Europe. Meanwhile, listen for the opening night performance on CBC Radio 2’s CANADA LIVE in the upcoming weeks. (Stayed tuned for more details.)

Calgary’s One Yellow Rabbit Performance Theatre is presenting Lullaby Baxter’s new musical, Garden Cities of To-morrow, on January 15th and 16th in the Big Secret Theatre at the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts. Lullaby Baxter on CBC’s Canada Live with Lily String Quartet

A concert featuring Lullaby Baxter and Lily String Quartet will air on CBC Radio 2’s Canada Live on May 16th at 8 PM.

The concert was recorded earlier this month in Calgary as part of the Combo To Go series presented by CBC Radio 2 and the Epcor Centre.

The Combo To Go series “brings together musicians from different backgrounds in a spirit of collaboration”. Lily String Quartet will accompany Lullaby on selections from her latest release Garden Cities of To-morrow. Lullaby, in turn, will sing along with selections from the Lily repertoire: Piazzolla, Mendelssohn, and tango idol Carlos Gardel.

Lullaby Baxter will perform with Lily String Quartet in Calgary on Tuesday April 10th from 12-1 PM in the lobby of the Jack Singer Concert Hall at the Epcor Centre For The Performing Arts.

This FREE noon hour concert is part of the COMBO TO GO series presented by CBC Radio 2 and the Epcor Centre. It will be recorded for broadcast nationally on CBC Radio 2’s new concert show, CANADA LIVE. Listeners in Alberta will also be able to catch the performance on Radio 1’s KEY OF A. (Stay tuned for broadcast times.)

Lullaby makes Gothe’s 2006 Hit List and more

Lullaby Baxter’s Garden Cities of To-morrow has made Jurgen Gothe’s 2006 Hit List, his “annual round-up of the year’s favourites and/or bests.” Tune in to CBC Radio One on Sunday December 10. Lullaby will be featured in Part 2 between 8 and 10 PM. Her debut, Capable Egg, made the list in 2000.

Also, CBC Radio One’s afternoon program Freestyle is featuring Lullaby Baxter as their “Artist of the Week” all this week. Tune in at 2 PM (in most parts of the country).

Lullaby Baxter’s video for “Rattled Little Clam” makes its television debut tonight on Much Music’s The Wedge. It will be on in the second half of the hour, right before Feist and PJ Harvey. The almighty Pitchfork has reviewed Garden Cities of To-morrow and they quite liked it! Here’s a bit of what they had to say:

“Baxter’s jazzy alto carries echoes of singers like Ella Fitzgerald … standout “Sugar” opens with pulsing “I Am the Walrus” Mellotron before dissolving in country-rock lead guitar licks, delirious strings, whirling Wurlitzer, and ostinato bass line. A flute quartet, harp, timpani, marimba, and even djembe dress up other tracks in full Herculean garb, with Ennio Morricone’s flair for the cinematic … when Baxter matches her urbane oddities and Hercules’ pastoral popscaping just right, it’s like a stroll through leafy, tree-lined city blocks in early autumn twilight … a masterwork of urban planning for a city out of an enchanted kingdom.”
