Sekiden’s first full-length album, Junior Fiction, is due out in stores February 24th. Look for them on tour throughout March and April in Canada and the US.

Since their inception in late ‘98 Sekiden have gone from strength to strength, inking a deal with Modular recordings in 2000. They released two critically acclaimed EPs Better Music Through Mathematics and Love Songs For Robots. The singles that were released instantly sprang into the hearts and minds of the listening public, receiving numerous weeks of high rotation on Australia’s biggest national radio station JJJ, ABC TV music show RAGE and FOXTEL Channel V for all three related singles. In conjunction with the releases, Sekiden played eleven consecutive national tours in two years, rocking the stages of the Big Day Out, Weekender, numerous pubs and clubs all over the continent, as well as the main stage at the Brisbane LIVID Festival and a bunch of live TV performances.

This year sees Sekiden embark on the second phase of their world domination plans, with the release of their much-anticipated long player Junior Fiction.

Well-known Brisbane producer Magoo, recognising good clean fun when he sees it, approached Sekiden and the pair hit it off straight away, forming the perfect pop partnership. The team went into hiding in Magoo’s secret studio to record eleven songs of pure pop that takes you everywhere from inside a Game Boy to a stadium Rock Show.

With the completion of phase two, Sekiden will move to phase three and hit the stage once more on their long anticipated tour to Canada and the USA, after which an Australian national tour will follow.

So keep one ear on the ground and the other on the receiver, February 10, 2004 Boompa Records will release Sekiden’s Junior Fiction!! Be ready.

Chris Robinson and Andrea Higgens are music supervisors for Arpix and they’ve gotten songs by Boompa bands played on shows and independent films including Radio Free Roscoe, The Surreal Gourmet and Life With Derek. They are super fans of us, and we are super fans of them.

The spotlight features new and unreleased materials from 6 of our artists including a bunch of stuff the Salteens have been working on in the studio the past few months. An excerpt from a personal email sent by Simon, the guitarist, states: “the drums are completed and we are currently 70 percent through the guitars starting synths next week at Snake Mountain.” No date has been muscled out for the launch of the record but it seems fall would be a good date to hold your breathe till.

If you are lucky enough to be lodging Down Under the band will be playing shows that you can go dance to. Said shows will be updated when the dates are confirmed. There are also new t-shirts in the works but are only available in Australia as well as Japan. I am sure that if you talk to them sweetly though you can work out a way to get your Canuck hands on these shirts.

Radio Free Roscoe featured The Salteens, Sekiden, Reverie Sound Revue and the Yoko Casionos. The Yokos, Salteens, Reverie, and Cleveland indie-rockers Kiddo will also be included on the Radio Free Roscoe soundtrack coming out this spring.

Billy + the Lost Boys and the Salteens were also featured on the hit series Joan of Arcadia while Kevin Kane, The Lucksmiths and The Salteens will be heard on the upcoming Dawson’s Creek DVD.

Degrassi: The Next Generation is super popular in Australia and the Lucksmiths could hardly contain their excitement over getting a placement. You can also hear Flash Bastard, Billy the Kid (Solo), Morning Maker, Sekiden, Deadletter Dept., and The Yoko Casionos in last year’s season.

Natasha Thirsk of Catlow and The Dirtmitts was also featured in The L-Word along with Vancouver newcomers The Capitals and Cleveland’s Kiddo. And Girl Nobody and The Salteens were placed in the local production of Alienated.

In sporting news, our good friend and pro-skier Heather Roberts produced a Whistler ski film called The Girls Movie and it featured tracks from Billy + the Lost Boys, The Salteens, Sekiden, and Girl Nobody. Global TV’s The Ride Guide. also tracked Kiddo, The Salteens, and Billy. And The Salteens’, “You Stood out from the Crowd”, was also the title track of The Mascot Movie., a documentary on the lives of your favourite team mascots and the people behind the bear suits. “The purpose of this release was to compile the best songs from our artists and friends,” said Robert Calder, VP of Boompa Records. “On this release, we’ve struck a great balance of established, experienced artists alongside of up and comers and even some artists that we wish were still together.”

In its first year of operation, Boompa Records managed to surround itself wih an international talent base, thanks in part to the globetrotting that Calder and Scott Walker have done as members of college radio veterans The Salteens.

“Over the years, we’ve toured Australia, Japan and the States,” said Walker, president of Boompa Records. “When we started Boompa Records, our inital goal was to take all of these amazingly talented artists that we’d performed with overseas and bring them into Canada.”

In 2003, Boompa released albums from two of Australia’s most well-established artists on the underground circut. The mellow pop of Naturaliste by cult fave’s The Lucksmiths has been lauded by Rolling Stone magazine as “… Australia’s best kept secret” while new wave, pop-punk trio Sekiden already blasted through Canada twice since the Spring 2004 release of their debut album Junior Fiction.

This September, Boompa will also be releasing new albums from 2004 Georgia Straight Music Award winners Billy + the Lost Boys and Victoria’s own Run Chico Run, both of whom are featured on Boompa Volume 1. Additional highlights include ex-Grapes of Wrath singer/songwriter Kevin Kane, the mutton-chop rock gems of The Dudes, the bass-fuelled sensory exploration of Circlesquare and The Ladies and Gentlemen - the latest project from Thom D’Arcy, former lead singer for The Carnations. Top it off with tracks from Vancouver’s The Dirtmitts, Natasha Thirsk and Sparrow. Lest we forget, there’s also a hidden treasure on the disc so be sure to dig deep.

From shiny pop sensibilities and wistful indie-rock to cinematic electro-ambience and the raw honesty of straight-up punk, Boompa Volume 1 is an introduction to one of the most innovative new labels in North America.

“This is definitely a collection which is going to grab people’s attention,” said Calder. “It’s ideal for people whose musical tastes are not focused on one particular genre but on quality and diversity.”

On Wednesday, May 26th Sekiden will be performing live at the MTV studios which will be broadcast on MTVSelect on June 1st.
