Boompa Records is proud to announce the release of Mood Swings, from Toronto’s Small Sins. The sophomore album, and follow up to last year’s eponymous debut Small Sins, is set to be released September 25th through Boompa in Canada and Astralwerks in the USA.

Small Sins was a masterpiece of wistful electro chamber-pop, with hushed stories of love lost and found. The critics agreed, with Blender calling it a “…lovely piece of campfire synth-pop”, and Spin opining - “Imagine if Jack White had a crush on Kraftwerk.” The band toured the US relentlessly, with dates supporting Scissor Sisters, The Kooks, Radio 4, The Little Ones, and Sloan. Mood Swings fuses the power of their live show with their knack for penning addictive hook-laden gems.

Small Sins was originally conceived by Thomas D’Arcy as a self-contained solo unit, with D’Arcy not only singing and playing every instrument on his debut album, but also writing, producing, and recording it entirely on his own. As D’Arcy began to perform live with four exceptional musicians: Steve Krecklo (guitar, banjo, keyboards) Todor Kobakov (keyboards), Brent Follett (drums), and Kevin Hilliard (percussion, handclaps), they found themselves occasionally writing together and talking about future recording plans. It was inevitable that D’Arcy would involve them in the making of Mood Swings.

The album was recorded mostly at D’Arcy’s home in Toronto, although not in the traditional sense. D’Arcy wanted to strike a balance between recording on his own and with the rest of the band- thus retaining the intimacy found on Small Sins, while capturing the energy of the live band.

The result is an album that one can mellow out at to home, as well as turn up to feel the power and vitality of the live show. This new vigor is most notably heard on the explosive tale of retribution “On The Line” and the driving “We Will Break Our Own Hearts”.

Elsewhere on Mood Swings D’Arcy’s recurring themes of longing and revenge are evident on “On The Run” and “What Your Baby’s Been Doing” - both songs juxtaposing pensive lyrics with buoyant up-beats. And then there are the guns- references to guns and other weapons are used throughout the entire album as metaphors for power and conflict. All of these contrasting sentiments can be summed up in two words we can all relate to -

Mood Swings.

TRACKLISTING:
I Need A Friend
Morning Face
What Your Baby’s Been Doing
On The Line
Prove Me Wrong
Drunk E-mails
On The Run
It Keeps Me On My Toes
Airport
On A Mission
We Will Break Our Own Hearts
Holiday
Bullet

Then at midnight, you should go see Boompa’s newest band, The Hylozoists, at the Silver Dollar. The Hylozoists is a 9-piece mallet instrument mini-orchestra featuring members of Cuff The Duke, FemBots, Weakerthans, Old Soul, Fuermusik, Broken Social Scene, Hopeful Monster, Heavy Blinkers, Hayden, Minotaurs, Golden Dogs, Deadly Snakes, Andre Ethier, Sadies, Bodega and so on. On the friends of Boompa note: Edmonton MC, Cadence Weapon is on stage right before The Hylozoists and you should check him out too, because he is the dope shit and he just finished up a Catlow remix that you’ll hear sometime soon.

The thing that makes March such a crazy month, is that immediately following CMW is SXSW. This year three Boompa bands are heading south:

Run Chico Run will go all Celcius on your Fahrenheit asses at Zero Degrees on Friday, March 17 at 9pm.

Also check out Smalls Sins at the Astralwerks showcase at the Parish on Saturday, March 18.

Astralwerks and Boompa Records are proud to announce the addition of Toronto based artist Small Sins (formerly known in Canada as The Ladies and Gentlemen) to Astralwerks diverse and exciting roster. Small Sins self-titled album will be released on May 30, 2006.

Boompa Records, a Vancouver-based independent label, initially released The Ladies and Gentlemen debut album Small Sins to critical acclaim across Canada in September 2005. The buzz spread after a sold-out Boompa Records label showcase at Austin’s SXSW ‘05 music festival, where The Ladies & Gentlemen were one of the label’s showcasing artists. Astralwerks then signed D’Arcy under the Small Sins moniker in late 2005.

Most Canadians already know the story: Thomas D’Arcy - the solo mastermind behind Small Sins - marches to the beat of his own drum machine. That’s what he discovered after spending the better chunk of a decade in bands percolating around the indie-rock scene of his Canada hometown of Toronto, ON. By Christmas 2004, D’Arcy found his band broken up and himself in the midst of a mid-twenties crisis.

“I was really questioning what I was doing with my life,” D’Arcy says. “Why am I in this band I don’t love? Why am I not making music that I do love? I was thinking back to how things used to be, when it was pure spirit and fun. Music had become work, yet I still felt like I should be getting to work on something.”

And get to work he did. D’Arcy retreated alone to the basement of his childhood home: armed with little more than a Roland 707 drum machine, a clutch of vintage Moog keyboards, and a sixteen-track recorder, he was determined to create sounds that reflected the passion that led him to music in the first place. After nearly a year of woodshedding, D’Arcy fulfilled his goal, emerging with Small Sins. A masterpiece of heartfelt electro chamber-pop, Small Sins bubbles with gorgeously layered harmonies, synth gurgles, and hook-filled tales of love lost and found as honest and bracing as the Canadian winter. Despite its intensely personal nature, Small Sins became D’Arcy’s most well-received musical venture yet.

Astralwerks GM Errol Kolosine commented, “I was already in love with the album and after seeing the band live only once, it was obvious they HAD to be on Astralwerks. Thom is one of the most extraordinary and exciting new artists we’ve had the pleasure to encounter and we see an amazing future with SMALL SINS.”
